SUPPORT THE SOUTH FORK FRIENDS FOUNDATION

The South Fork Friends Foundation is a philanthropic organization focused on enhancing South Fork’s unique appeal by funding activities that highlight its amazing beauty, builds community relationships, encourages volunteerism and brings creative projects to life.

  • Sponsored the Tiger Bucks Program for Del Norte Schools
  • Resurfaced the Pickle Ball Courts at the Community Center and provided new equipment, nets and windscreens.
  • Provided new tables and chairs for the South Fork Community Center
  • Yearly community beautification including  flower boxes  and planters at the Community and Visitor's Centers
  • Sponsor the annual Alder Creek Ass Race
  • Sponsor the South Fork Friends Foundation annual Arts and Crafts Craft Festival
  • Every November after Thanksgiving, the Foundation lights up South Fork with Christmas Lights at the Visitor's Center and around the historic water tower on Highway 160

The South Fork Friends Foundation is governed by a Board of Directors operating under a set of by-laws defining the scope and operation of the organization.  Directors serve three year terms.  In addition to the Board, the Committee is a working group of volunteers that carry out the various projects of the Foundation.

Rickel Park

The Rickel Park Ice Skating Rink and Basketball Court

The new skate rink was the site of SIX Saturday evening skate parties in January and February of 2024. Although not even completed, this facility is already drawing praise as a premier family attraction in South Fork.

Almost three years ago we launched our "Legacy Fund", which was to be used to build a permanent ice skating rink/basketball court complex at the largely vacant Rickel Park.

To date, we have completed the following:

  • An ADA accessible walkway was constructed from the upper parking lot to the lower recreation area
  • Concrete pad with water retention perimeter walls was poured, to be used for ice rink in the winter and basketball courts in summer
  • Three basketball hoops have been installed with a fourth one on site and awaiting installation
  • Adjacent ground was leveled to accommodate a Volleyball Court
  • Large boulders were placed to surround the courts with an artistic, mountain-themed landscaping design
  • Two, 10' by 14' gazebos are being constructed near the river with a walkway and a fire pit joining them. These gazebos will feature solar powered lights, outlets, and phone charging stations. These gazebos are on site and awaiting some ground preparation before they are constructed.

What's next:

  • Solar lights will surround the courts for night time basketball games and skate parties and other events.
  • Upgrade playground facilities
  • Landscaping
  • Walking Path
  • Replace the existing skate shack with a much larger building which will include a concession stand to make holding events there much easier in both summer and winter.

We still need your help!

We continue to raise funds to improve access to the park, complete the brick walkway and provide volleyball nets for multi-use.  To contribute to this project simply mail your check to the South Fork Friends Foundation, PO Box 654, South Fork, Co. 81154.  If you want your donation to be directed specifically to the Rickel Park project, write "Rickel Park" on your check or include a note stating this.
